Evaluation Philosophy and Theoretical Foundations of the WFSRI
The WFSRI does not assess organizational Responsible Management solely on the basis of current performance or individual activities. It considers the impacts generated by organizational decisions and activities, how organizations recognize and fulfill responsibilities corresponding to those impacts, and how such responsibilities extend to stakeholders and communities, as well as present and future generations.
At the center of this perspective is the highest-order Evaluation Philosophy of the WFSRI, “Responsibility Corresponding to Impact,” supported by five theoretical foundations for a comprehensive understanding of Responsible Management.
I. Highest-Order Evaluation Philosophy: Responsibility Corresponding to Impact
The highest-order Evaluation Philosophy of the WFSRI is “Responsibility Corresponding to Impact.”
“As the influence of an organization expands, responsibility corresponding to that influence should also expand.”
Organizations create economic and social value through diverse decisions and activities while also generating positive or negative impacts on the environment and society, stakeholders, and communities. Decisions and activities made today may also have long-term impacts beyond the present, affecting the environment, resources, safety, opportunities, and living conditions available to future generations.
Accordingly, understanding organizational responsibility requires consideration not only of the outcomes an organization creates, but also of the impacts generated in producing those outcomes and how the organization fulfills responsibilities corresponding to those impacts.
II. Relationship between Impact and Responsibility
“Responsibility Corresponding to Impact” does not limit organizational responsibility to internal activities or direct performance. It considers those affected by organizational decisions and activities, the scope, nature, and duration of impacts, and the responsibilities corresponding to those impacts.
Organizational size alone does not determine whether the level of Responsible Management is high or low, nor does the scale of influence alone determine evaluation results. What matters is how an organization recognizes its role and scope of impact and how responsibilities arising from those impacts are reflected in policies, systems, decision-making, operations, and actual conduct.
This philosophy is not intended merely to expand the number of evaluation items. It provides a fundamental basis for determining how the scope of Responsible Management evaluation is structured and how it should evolve in response to changing conditions.
III. Five Theoretical Foundations of the WFSRI
Based on the highest-order Evaluation Philosophy of “Responsibility Corresponding to Impact,” the WFSRI is grounded in five theoretical foundations for understanding organizational Responsible Management across multiple dimensions.
Principle of Impact and Responsibility
This perspective considers the impacts generated by organizational activities and decisions together with the responsibilities arising from those impacts. It considers not only what activities an organization has undertaken, but also what impacts those activities generate and how the organization fulfills responsibilities arising from those impacts.
Stakeholder Responsibility
This perspective considers the rights, safety, opportunities, and legitimate interests of diverse stakeholders affected by organizational activities. It extends organizational responsibility beyond the organization’s own performance to include the impacts of its decisions and activities on shareholders and investors, employees, consumers and users, business partners, and other stakeholders.
Intergenerational Responsibility
This perspective considers the long-term impacts that present decisions may have on the environment, resources, safety, opportunities, and living conditions available to future generations.
It considers whether present-generation performance and benefits create excessive environmental or social costs or risks for future generations and examines the implications of organizational decisions for both present and future sustainability.
Public and Community Responsibility
This perspective extends organizational responsibility beyond relationships with individual stakeholders to encompass the sustainability of society and communities, Public Value, Social Value, and community trust.
Corporations, public institutions, and other organizations differ in their roles and functions, but their decisions and activities may affect local communities, broader communities, and society as a whole. Responsible Management therefore needs to consider not only organizational performance but also impacts on society and communities and the responsibilities arising from those impacts.
Responsibility for Future Society and Future Generations
This perspective considers emerging technological, social, and environmental changes and new opportunities and risks, together with an organization’s capacity to responsibly manage their potential impacts on future society and future generations.
Technological innovation, including artificial intelligence (AI), changes in industrial structures and social conditions, new environmental challenges, and future and emerging risks may create new opportunities for organizations while also generating new responsibilities. Responsible Management therefore needs to consider not only responses to impacts that have already occurred but also the capacity to anticipate, prepare for, and responsibly respond to future changes and impacts.
IV. Relationship between the Evaluation Philosophy and Theoretical Foundations
“Responsibility Corresponding to Impact” is the highest-order Evaluation Philosophy through which the WFSRI understands Responsible Management, while the five theoretical foundations give concrete form to this philosophy through the perspectives of organizational impact, stakeholders, intergenerational responsibility, public and community responsibility, and future society.
This Evaluation Philosophy and its theoretical foundations do not correspond solely to any single evaluation item. Together, they form the fundamental theoretical basis through which the WFSRI understands the scope of Responsible Management and informs the continuing development of the SEC Evaluation Methodology and SEC Evaluation Framework.
